From-Scratch Sugar Cookies with Icing Recipe

From-Scratch Sugar Cookies with Icing Recipe
Every winter, my family would bake all sorts of treats for our friends and neighbors-- fudge, peppermint candy, and my personal favorite: the sugar cookie. As I got older, I found new ways to make the cookies even more delicious and allow them to melt in your mouth. Here's a tried-and-true recipe for the best from-scratch sugar cookies and icing you will ever try.

General:

  • Yields ~2.5 dozen cookies
  • Baking time: 7 min.
  • Oven: 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Cookie Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus a little to sprinkle on the counter top
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Iodized Salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of milk
  • OPTIONAL: Sprinkles

Supplies:

  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Plenty of counter space
  • Oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Baking Sheet
  • Cookie cutters
  • Measuring Cups

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Mix egg, sugar, milk, salt, baking powder, butter or margarine, and sprinkles together.
  3. Slowly add flour until a thick consistency. **NOTE** Extra flour may be needed for this step if your dough is very sticky.
  4. Sprinkle flour on your baking space. This will keep the dough from sticking to your counter tops.
  5. Roll and flatten dough with your palms.
  6. Use cookie cutters to cut cookies into fun shapes. Place on baking sheet
  7. Bake for 7 minutes. Add icing shortly after removing cookies from the oven.

Ingredients (Icing)

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Supplies

  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Spoon to pour icing on cookies

Instructions:

  1. Mix ingredients together in mixing bowl
  2. Add food coloring to desired color.
  3. After removing cookies from oven, use the spoon to add icing to the cookies.
  4. Enjoy!
