It took some time to earn that head full of white or gray hair--and you love it! However, you've noticed yellowing in some patches, at the tips or near the scalp. How did this happen and what can you do about it? You don't have to reach for the hair color. Understanding how brassiness occurs will help you remove yellow from your gray hair.
So how did this happen? According to Dr. Andrew Weil, "I've seen many theories as to what causes silver or white hair to turn yellow. It may be an age-related pigment change, but it also could be due to any one of various external influences. Because gray and white hair doesn't contain any of the pigment that colors younger hair, it tends to show colors of foreign materials picked up from water (from the shower or swimming pools for example) or even from pollutants in the air."
Other medical professionals suggest that gray hair turns yellow because of a loss of melanin. Whatever the reason, you probably want it to go. Try these tips and remove yellow from gray hair whenever it appears.
Store Bought Solutions
Commercial products like correcting shampoos and rinses can banish that yellow tint. These wash in products introduce a blue or purple tint into your hair. This cool color hides yellow, brightens gray and reduces unwanted brassiness.
Home Remedies to Fix Yellowing Gray Hair

Other Tips That Can Help
- Try installing filters in your shower. It could be the chlorine in the water!
