Use Paint to Personalize Your Home’s Front Door

Since the front door is the first thing people see when they visit your home, why not personalize it with a paint color so it stands out from the other homes on the block? Use these paint color guidelines and personalize your home’s front door.
White, black and red are the three 'safe' colors home owners select for their front doors. Not bad choices by any means, but since the front door is the first thing people see when they visit your home, why not personalize it with a different paint color so it stands out from the other homes on the block? Use these paint color guidelines and personalize your home's front door because color does make a difference.

Neutral Siding with Glass

If your home has a neutral color of siding, like beige, cream or white and your front door has a lot of glass, then you have a free pass to go bold with your paint color choice.
Neutral siding and a door that has a glass surround or glass panes within the door is well able to handle intense color. The siding and glass will tone down the color intensity so it won't overwhelm the front of the house but will add a unique pop of color.
Use bright paint colors like tangerine orange, lemon yellow, chocolate brown, sky blue or grass green. Use two contrasting colors, one for the door and another for the trim around the door and nearby windows to make an even bolder personal statement.

Brick or Stone

Brick or stone siding already contains a complexity of colors, so it's best to select a paint color for the front door from a hue that is already present in the brick or stone. Look for subtle shades of green, red and gray that are typically imbedded within the brick or stone and use that for the paint color of the front door. If that doesn't give your home enough curb appeal, paint the door trim bright white to make the front door stand out.

Colorful Siding

Colorful siding provides show-stopping curb appeal and you don't want a paint color for the front door that competes with house color. Select a paint color that compliments the siding color, like a pale yellow against a backdrop of deep blue or green siding. A complimentary color can still be bright and bold and personalize the front door as long as the paint colors are not competing for attention.
