Staying Safe While Traveling Internationally

Staying Safe While Traveling Internationally
Traveling abroad is a terrific way to experience other cultures. It's exciting and fun. However, there is some risk involved in leaving the great United States. Throughout my years as a flight attendant, I learned many little tricks to keep myself and my traveling mates safe. Check them out before you head out of the country.

· Pickpocketing-While we don't often worry about pickpocketing that much in the US, it's a real problem in some other countries. Europe especially has a high number of pickpocketing complaints. There are some things you can do to lessen your chances of losing your valuables this way.
Place your cash, credit card, and ID in your front pocket. It's pretty difficult for someone to reach in your front pocket without you realizing it.
Leave the purse in your hotel room. Take only what you need for the day, and put it in your front pocket.
Don't walk through large crowds. Stay toward the perimeter when walking through popular areas
· The mustard game-Popular in South America, one person squirts mustard on your back (unbeknownst to you). Another person walks up and offers to help clean you up. While the two of you are cleaning, another grabs your belongings and runs off. If you find yourself in this situation, kindly refuse the help and jump in the nearest cab or store.
· Transportation-Only use registered cabs and drivers. Most hotels will recommend a driver or secure a cab for you. Also, ask for the fare before heading out. There are some sneaky drivers who prey on tourists. Have a map with you, and pay attention. If you notice the driver going off the path to your destination, ask him about it. If you don't get a satisfactory answer, exit the car at the next stop sign/light.
· The buddy system-Just like you learned in grade school, go with a buddy. Do not venture out alone if you don't have to. One person is an easy target, but two or more are often too much trouble for would-be robbers. If you must go out alone, make sure someone knows where you are headed and when to expect you back. If you are traveling alone, leave a note in your hotel room or mention your plans to one of the hotel staff.
· Blend in- It's probably not the best idea to wear your, "I'm proud to be an American" t-shirt oversees. You don't want to do anything to bring unwanted attention to yourself. Also, leave the shiny jewelry in the hotel, or better yet leave it safe at home. This is not the time to flash around expensive items.
· Be aware- Before leaving the US, watch the news, check the State Department website, and take notice of any political unrest in the area you are headed. Once there, avoid large, political demonstrations. Make sure you have phone numbers to the US Embassy and Consulate in case you need help while away from home.

By being smart and taking a few precautions, your time outside the United States can be wonderful. The world is full of rich history, culture, and people. Enjoy it!
