Ideas for Using Old T-Shirts to Make New Works of Art

If you have old t-shirts with lettering or graphics that are too worn to wear, do not turn them into rags. The designs can be used to make works of wall art or other unique items. Pull them out of storage or off of the rag shelf, and use one or more of these creative ideas. You will be amazed by what you can do with a pair of scissors, tacks, canvas and fabric adhesive. Some of the following options do not even require cutting, trimming or glue, and they are all no-sew options for creating something new and decorative from a favorite garment.

Wrap Canvases with T-Shirts to Make Fabric Wall Hangings

The easiest way to use old t-shirts to make new works of art is also one of the best. The shirt is not altered or destroyed, and it does not take artistic talent to do it. Buy a stretched canvas and tacks to make a unique fabric wall hanging. Neatly wrap the canvas with a favorite old shirt, and fold up the excess material. Secure it on the back of the stretched canvas frame using tacks. Cover the tacks with felt squares to prevent wall damage.

Display the Material in an Embroidery Hoop

If you want to create a round work of art using old t-shirts, visit the cross-stitch and embroidery section of a local craft store. Buy an embroidery hoop of the appropriate size for displaying the graphics or lettering on your favorite tees. Unlike the aforementioned option, the material will have to be trimmed. The hoop will prevent it from fraying around the edges.

Cover Dimensional Cardboard Letters with T-Shirt Fabric

Big dimensional cardboard letters are available in craft stores, and they are ready to paint and decorate. However, paint is not required. Consider covering the letters with fabric from old t-shirts. The graphics will add to the artistic appeal and uniqueness of the lettering. Cut the tees into pieces that are large enough to completely and separately wrap each segment, and secure the material with spray-on adhesive and fabric tape. The tape is available in a wide array of colors and designs. Display a name, a single word or an entire phrase on a bare wall, and enjoy your old tees for years to come.
