It is hard to find unique decor for the kitchen, especially when shopping in popular retail stores. Countless people are buying the same things for their homes, and kitchen items are no exception. When looking for ways to enhance your home with one-of-a-kind decorations, come up with homemade works of handcrafted art. They will be completely original, and they will make fantastic conversation pieces. Start by making a wall rack with metal spoons. As the photo shows, it will turn out great. You will be able to creatively display potholders, hanging taper candles and more.
Necessary Supplies
To make a wall rack with metal spoons you will need a wooden backing to hold the hooks. You will also need a center punch, an electric drill, a very sharp titanium or carbide drill bit, pan-head metal screws, decorative metal screw caps, a carpenter's square, cutting oil, a pencil, acrylic paint in a color or colors of your choice and a paint brush. For safety reasons you will need a vice that will tightly and securely hold the metal spoons during the drilling process, and you will need eye protection.
Procedure
Begin the wall rack by painting the wooden backing. Use the photo as a guide, or come up with your own color combination and design. Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing.
Tightly clamp the first spoon in a vice, and generously apply cutting oil. Drill a hole in the center of the spoon at slow to medium speed. Continue the process until you have drilled holes in the centers of all of the spoons. Bend the handles to create the hooks, and set them aside.
After the paint has fully dried, measure the wooden backing to determine where the holes should be placed. Use a carpenter's square to make them even. Mark the spots with a pencil before drilling starter holes in the wood. Attach the spoons using metal screws, and top the screws with decorative caps. Your kitchen wall rack should be ready to hang.
Optional Additions
If desired, your kitchen wall rack can be decorated further. Short peel and stick sayings are ideal. They can be found in major craft stores and online. Either Home, Sweet Home or Kiss the Cook would be perfect for a kitchen wall rack. Use a carpenter's square and a pencil to lightly mark the painted wood, and carefully apply the lettering.
Wooden inlays can also be used to beautifully decorate a wooden kitchen wall rack. They are relief carvings with flat backs, and when they are attached to wood backings they look phenomenal. They can turn ordinary kitchen decor into something far more impressive, even those that include old metal spoons.
