Easy Peasy Cabbage+Bacon+Turkey Recipe

Easy Peasy Cabbage+Bacon+Turkey Recipe
Since the cabbage was only 46 cents per pound that particular week, we surely made a meal out of it. This has been my recipe since I can remember. It's way too easy, and you can use any ground meat you like with or without the bacon. But my family definitely prefers the bacon version.

What you will need:

1 head cabbage
1 small pack ground turkey or beef (75% lean)
1/2 cup bacon (or however much you actually want)
1 bulb garlic
1 medium onion
1 medium tomato
salt
pepper
Italian seasoning or oregano, parsley, basil, rosemary or anything you have in the cupboard
chili flakes (optional)

Cooking and Prep Time: 30 minutes (depending on how fast you cut your veggies)

How to cook:

  1. Chop the cabbage into shreds. Dice the onions, tomato, and garlic.
  2. Season the ground meat with salt, pepper, and spices. Set aside. (I usually add chili flakes to the meat.)
  3. Start sweating the bacon. Don't worry, it will give off oil which you will use. Start with the fat so that you get the oil without charring the meat part of the bacon. (Since my family likes crunchy bacon, I'd set it aside to keep it crispy.)
  4. Remove some of the bacon fat and some means a lot since I don't want to get a heart attack. I'd usually remove almost all of it. As long as the pan is glistening, then I'm pretty much set.
  5. Saute the onions til they are translucent. If they get a bit dark in color, don't panic
  6. Add the garlic until golden brown.
  7. Add the tomato and wait til it becomes mushy.
  8. Add the seasoned ground meat and wait for it to brown.
  9. Saute the cabbage and wait til it gets a bit wilted. Not too much since you want a bit of crunch.
  10. Add salt, pepper, and/or spices to taste.
  11. Top it with the crunchy bacon and serve to the next hungry person.
Healthy Tip: If you want it healthier, skip the bacon and use olive oil instead.
