Creative Ways to Reuse Wooden Window Shutters Indoors

Creative Ways to Reuse Wooden Window Shutters Indoors
Wooden shutters are typically used to visually frame the exterior of a home. However, they can be used in much more creative ways. They can be mounted indoors, and in ways that add visual interest, style and unique architectural appeal. Scour flea markets and places that sell reclaimed building supplies after considering these easy options. Your favorite finds can become unique additions to the interior of your home.

Frame and Decorate Interior Living Room Windows

Most people use shutters and flower boxes to add curb appeal to their home, but some of the most impressive displays are not outdoors. If you want to do something really unique in your living room, decorate the wall next to the windows with vintage shutters and gorgeous flower boxes. Fill the boxes with flowering houseplants of your choice. Primroses and violets are ideal in areas that receive filtered sunlight. Mount a decorative mailbox on the entryway wall for outgoing mail, and add a gazing ball, a concrete yard decoration or something else that is typically found outdoors. If lighting allows, flank the door with potted bushes. Flipping the outdoor view to the interior of the home will add artistic drama and a unique characteristic. Add indoor/outdoor wicker furniture to complete the outdoor look.

Cover an Entire Wall with Reclaimed Painted Shutters

If you do not want to flip a portion of the exterior of your home into your main living area, consider covering an entire wall in another location. Select a small wall in a utility room, an attic, a mudroom or any other appropriate location. Cover the entire wall with a variety of vintage shutters that have been painted in coordinating colors. Mount some of them horizontally and others vertically. They should all fit together like an unusual geometric puzzle. Although it is a contemporary decorating technique, it will ooze with country cottage style. The wall will look amazing!

Surround a Scenic Work of Art

Those with a penchant for traditional decor can do something far less risky. Vintage wooden shutters can be used to beautifully surround a scenic work of art. What was once just a painting can look like a window with a breathtaking view. When painted with realistic colors and great detail, the artwork will look as real as the view of an icy-blue mountain range, a grassy meadow, a serene lake or another eye-pleasing scene. The shutters will give the artwork a finished look while turning it from basic to something spectacular.
