Maintaining and Keeping Your Curls Happy

Maintaining and Keeping Your Curls Happy
Being natural can be challenging especially if you don't have the know how to take care of your curls. Some curly hair types, like those with tight, kinky, coils can experience dry, brittle, unruley hair without proper maintenance. This can be problematic in the long run and you could end up with disastrous hair!

Don't worry by following some simple in expensive steps you can have beautiful, healthy, defined curls.

Exercise and eat healthy
Eating the right foods and working out circulates the blood flow in your scalp which promotes hair growth. ***Be sure to consult a physician before any workout routine.***

Take Vitamins
Taking Vitamins daily is not mandatory but it aids in having healthy hair and a healthy body. Some vitamins to consider, are Multi-Vitamins, Vitamin E, and Biotin. ***Please consult your doctor before taking any vitamins or medicines.***

Drink Plenty of Water
Our body needs water to stay hydrated and to help our bodies grow. That includes our hair!

Detangle
Be sure to the detangle your hair when you wash or co-wash. (Weekly or Biweekly) Only detangle the hair when it's soaking wet or with conditioner. Be sure to use a wide tooth comb or your fingers. Please be gentle and start from the ends and work your way to the root. If too rough, you can actually cause more damage.

Condition
Weekly or biweekly conditioning is beneficial for hair growth and to maintain soft and healthy locks. Also, be sure to deep condition monthly or as needed. You can tell when you need to deep condition because the hair will start to look a little dull and blah.

Moisture! Moisture! Moisture!
Moisture is essential to natural hair care, especially those with tightly, coiled curls. Your hair should never be dry. One of the best moisturizers for your hair, that doesn't cost a dime is WATER! Yes, I did explain that you should drink plenty of water but you can also use it directly on your hair for instant moisture. A light spray of water on the hair in the morning and at night is all you need to keep your precious curls moisturized. You can also mix some natural oils in for that extra boost. Some oils like apricot oil and vegetable glycerin are natural moisturizers. These oils help to hydrate the hair even further.

Always sleep in a Satin Scarf
Sleeping in a satin scarf or laying on a satin pillow case can do wonders for your curls. Satin material does not soak up the moisture in your hair like cotton does and it helps reduce frizz. Satin scarfs range from $1-$5 and can last a long time.

Don't Manipulate
Some natural hair types may not look it, but the hair is actually fragile. Try not to put too much strain on the hair (too tight braids, constant pony tails or unnecessary tug and pull) this can cause extra shedding and breakage. Put your hair in a protective style and leave it alone until it's time to wash and condition again.

Wear Protective Styles
Wearing braids, two strand twist, or some form of protective style not only saves you time from doing your hair everyday, it also locks in moisture. Make sure these styles aren't too tight, as this may cause breakage especially around the edge line.

Remember, taking care of your hair is like taking care of your body. The better you treat it, the healthier you will become. Your hair will love you for being attentive and in return will show you the results you've always wanted.

Helpful Tips: Some ingredients in beauty products like silicone's, sulfates, para bans etc. can cause more damage to natural and chemically treated hair. Be sure to read the labels and research any ingredients you are unsure about.
